| Undersea Explorer and Conservationist Jacques Cousteau described the diving around Cozumel as some of the best in the world. Cozumel is situated off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. The diving at Cozumel is unique because it is entirely drift diving. The dive boat takes you to the location, you get into the water and go down. The current then takes you along the reef or wall. At the end of the dive, the Divemaster inflates a float which is attached to a line which he plays out. You follow the line to the surface and stay with the float until the boat comes for you. The speed that you travel along the reef depends on the speed of the current. Some dives you have a gentile current and you move slowly along the reef and sometimes you feel as tho you are traveling along at sixty miles an hour. The marine life of Cozumel is splendid. We have seen sharks, eels, rays, many varieties of fish and some of the most colorful coral imaginable. One of the greatest thrills is being able to swim along with a turtle and just watch the gentile movement of the flippers. After many years of diving in the British Virgin Islands, we decided to Dive Cozumel. We were referred to AQUATIC SPORTS & EXPEDITIONS of Cozumel by Blue Horizon Dive Shop in Philadelphia. AQUATIC SPORTS & EXPEDITIONS is a family organization which has been in operation for over thirty years and has perhaps the safest record on the island. Sergio Sandoval Vizcaino, his son Sergio, Jr. and his daughter, Betty and Paul Ellis, make up the team of Divemasters. Great diving is their business, but dive safety is their main focus. Each dive is planned to provide the diver with the best and safest diving conditions. Interval times between dives far exceed the recommended dive table time. This is why AQUATIC SPORTS & EXPEDITIONS safety record remains unparallled. A typical day of diving begins by meeting the divemaster either at the office at the corner of Calle 21 and Av. 20 Sur or at the boat at the Caletta Marina.Once all gear and people are onboard, the boat heads out for the first dive site. The first dive site is usually the deepest dive and is selected according to the diving skills of the divers as well as sea conditions. After the first dive is completed, divers are treated to a onboard lunch consisting of lunch meats, cheese, Salsa, rolls, chips, fruit and Guacamole, made fresh onboard by the Captain. Water and soda are provided. During lunch, the boat heads to the second dive site. After the required interval time has been reached and exceeded, everyone gears up and goes into the water for the second dive. After the second dive, the boat heads back to the marina thus ending another delightful day of diving in Cozumel with AQUATIC SPORTS& EXPEDITIONS. The Divemaster is always willing to spend time with each diver and share information and point out any areas of your diving that would make for more pleasurable and safer diving. |
